Do you need to pay for AI? Free vs paid, explained

Short answer: most people should start free. Here’s how to know when (and if) it’s worth paying.

What you get for free

Both ChatGPT and Claude have genuinely useful free versions. With either one you can:

• Chat as much as you like, within a daily limit
• Get help writing, summarising, planning and explaining
• Upload documents and photos
• Search the web for up-to-date answers
• Use the phone apps
• Organise your chats into Projects (with some limits)

For a lot of everyday use (a few emails a day, the odd letter, planning a holiday) free is plenty.

What the paid plans add

Paid plans usually cost around £20 a month (ChatGPT also has a cheaper plan called Go). They give you:

• More use. The main reason people upgrade. On free plans you’ll sometimes see “you’ve reached your limit, try again later”.
• The most capable versions of the AI, more of the time
• Extra features like in-depth research reports and more Projects, plus, depending on the tool, custom assistants or add-ons for Chrome and Office
• No adverts. ChatGPT’s free version may show ads.

The simple test

Upgrade when either of these is true:

1. You keep hitting the limit on days you actually need it, or
2. It’s saving you more than an hour a month. If your time is worth more than £20 an hour, it pays for itself.

If neither is true yet, stay free. There’s no prize for paying early.

Tips if you do pay

• Pay monthly first, not yearly, until you’re sure. (Yearly is cheaper once you know you’ll stick with it.)
• Pick one, not both. Paying for two is rarely necessary.
• Check what work provides. Your employer may already pay for an AI tool.
• Set a calendar reminder a month in. Are you using it enough?

What about the really expensive plans?

Plans at £100–£200 a month are for people using AI all day for demanding professional work. If you’re reading this guide, you almost certainly don’t need one.
